Men's Tennis Wins a Pair of IIAC Matches on Saturday

It was a big road trip from the Buena Vista men's tennis team on Saturday with its regular season drawing near an end, as the Beavers picked up a pair of league wins, edging both Loras College and the University of Dubuque by identical 5-4 scores.

Against the Duhawks, BVU built a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play, including a pair of 8-6 triumphs at both the one and two slots.

Chris Haberman notched a straight set win in his number one sinlge slot, while Jesse Brace did the same at number two by allowing only two combined points.

Kyle Weeden picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in his number four slot before Robby Steffes was victorious, 6-2, 6-3.

The Beavers then completed the sweep with its comeback win over the Spartans.  Dubuque came out and took two of the three doubles matches, but BVU salvaged the sweep as Brace teammed up with Grant Wright to win the three slot, 8-3.

Haberman and Steffes each recorded their second singles victory of the day to get BVU back on track to start singles play.  Habaerman cruised to a 7-5, 6-0 triumph with Steffes overcoming a first-set loss by taking the final two, 6-3, 6-2.  Kyle Weeden also dropped his first set at number four, but rallied back to win 6-1, 6-2, in the next two.

Wright also chipped in with a pivotal win at number six, picking up a convincing 6-3, 6-0 triumph.

Buena Vista improves to 4-13 overall (2-4 IIAC) and will look to close the regular season out with three straight wins when it hosts Simpson College (4-13, 1-3 IIAC). The two wins on Saturday moved the Beavers into fifth place in the IIAC standings.  A win over the Storm would secure a spot into the IIAC Team Tournament.
