Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Luther, 66-64

Box Score

The Buena Vista men's basketball team had its season-long seven-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a heartbreaking 66-64 road loss at Luther College.

The Norse led by as many as 16 points in the second half before the Beavers slowly clawed their way back to take a 60-58 with 5:12 to play.  It was BVU's first lead since the opening minutes of the first half.

The lead, however, was short-lived as Luther responded with consecutive three-point buckets to build a 64-60 advantage.  BVU kept within striking distance down the stretch, and a Kennedy Drey putback tied things back up at 64-64 with 1:28 left.

After a defensive stop by BVU, the team looked to take the lead late on its next offensive possession but had a pair of shots rim off, and the Norse grabbed the rebound.

Luther got the ball across halfcourt and called timeout with 22 seconds left, and out of the huddle, the Norse ran the clock down to under 10 seconds when Jake Martin hit a baseline jumper in front of his own bench with five seconds left to give Luther a 66-64 lead.

The Beavers then called timeout, and after drawing up a play, Cole Darrow, who made the game-winner against Luther just 10 days ago, got the ball on the inbounds and drove down the lane and his runner rimmed just out as time expired.

Darrow finished 3-of-16 from the field and turned in nine points and six rebounds.  Drey led the way with 15 points and 11 rebounds en route to his seventh double-double of the year.  Nick Clark, who scored 25 points in the win against Loras on Wednesday, followed-up with 10 points.

After shooting under 32 percent overall in the first half, BVU slowly found its touch over the final 20 minutes and finished the game at 29.7 percent overall.

Luther used 13 made three-point buckets to its advantage in the contest, despite shooting 35.8 percent from the field overall.

BVU outrebounded the Norse, 48-35, including 13 on the offensive end.

The two conference losses by the Beavers this season are by a combined five points.  Despite the loss, Buena Vista (15-6, 8-2 IIAC), did officially secure a spot into the IIAC Tournament and remains alone in first place by one game over both Coe and Dubuque.

The Beavers, who have won eight straight games inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, will look to extend that streak this week as they host a pair of games, starting on Wednesday night with an 8:00pm contest against Wartburg College.
