Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Wartburg

Box Score

Wartburg College hit a late three-pointer in regulation to force overtime, and then outscored the Buena Vista men's basketball team, 9-4, in the extra stanza, as the Beavers saw their 10-game home win streak snapped by the Knights, 93-88, on Thursday night in the semifinal round of the Iowa Conference Tournament.

BVU, the top-seed in the tournament, looked to be in control late in the game after building an 82-74 lead with 2:41 left to play.  Just as it did in the first two meetings this season, Wartburg made a late run, getting a three-pointer to cut the lead to six before following with a layup to make it a three-point contest at the 1:35 mark.

The Knights, the tournament's fifth-seed, then capped their 7-0 run with a pair of free-throws with 1:03 left before senior Alex Savage pushed the Beaver lead back up to three at 84-81 with 32 ticks to go.

Wartburg then elected to let the clock run down on its next possession before Jordan Cannon, who chalked up a game-high 32 points, drilled a game-tying three-point shot with a hand in his face and only eight seconds left.

The Beavers looked to get a go-ahead basket at the other end, but Cole Darrow's runner came up short, and after the ball went out of bounce off Wartburg, the last-second heave with .5 seconds left was off target by Kennedy Drey to send the game into overtime.

The team's traded baskets at the start of overtime before Wartburg upped its lead to 90-86 after two free-throws with 2:38 left.  Brett Heitkamp kept Buena Vista within striking distance at 90-88 with a put-back, and after Wartburg made just 1-of-2 at the free-throw line, the Beavers had a chance to cut into that lead.

After missing the front-end of a 1-and-1 trip to the free-throw line, BVU came up with a stop at the defensive end, but after Wartburg fouled BVU to keep the Beavers from a three-point attempt, the Beavers couldn't convert at the charity stripe and Wartburg tacked on two of its own to secure the win.

Nick Clark turned in a team-leading 27 points, on 10-of-21 shooting for Buena Vista, including 5-of-11 from downtown.  He also dished out six assists and had four steals, while playing a team-high 39 minutes.

Drey followed with his fourth straight double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds.  Heitkamp was big off the bench for the Beavers, also adding a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards.  Fellow senior Alex Savage was the fourth player to score in double figures for Buena Vista, scoring 13 points to go along with his game-high seven assists.

The Beavers (18-8) shot 42 percent from the field, but went just 7-of-33 from downtown and 7-of-14 at the free-throw line, as they lost for the first time this season when scoring at least 80 points (11-1).

Four starters were in double figures for the Knights (14-12), as they had just two points off the bench.

Wartburg advances to the Iowa Conference championship game on Saturday night and will travel to third-seed Dubuque.  Buena Vista will wait until 'Selection Monday' to learn if the team can earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
