Men's Hoops Drops 2OT Thriller at Home to #6 Elmhurst, 125-115

Box Score

Senior Nick Clark scored a game-high 36 points, dished out a career-best 14 assists, and junior Kennedy Drey drilled a three-pointer at the end of the first overtime to send the game into extra frames, but the Buena Vista men's basketball team came up short in double overtime to sixth-ranked Elmhurst on Saturday afternoon, 125-115.

BVU was in front 4-2 early on before Elmhurst went on to score 10 straight points and go up 12-4 with five minutes gone by.  The Bluejays led by as much as nine in the half (40-31) with 2:40 to go before Clark scored all seven of his first half points to get the team within 45-40 at the half.

Elmhurst came out on a 16-9 run to begin the second stanza and built the game's largest lead at 61-49. BVU responded, however, with three straight layups to help spark a 16-4 spirt over the next five minutes to pull even with a pair of free-throws by senior Bobby Ivey.

A 17-9 run by Elmhurst pushed its lead back to eight at 82-74 with 8:00 remaining.  The Bluejays continued to answer every basket by BVU and were still in front 94-87 with 3:32 left.

Clark took a pass from Adam Juhl for a layup to begin the final surge by the Beavers, as Clark then drilled another three to bring the team within two with under 3:00 left in regulation.  Drey tied things up at 94-94 after making 1-of-2 at the free-throw line with 1:47 to play.  Elmhurst regained the lead with a bucket at the 1:26 mark, and after the teams traded turnovers, Clark was fouled with 23 seconds left and calmly stepped to the line and hit both.  The Bluejays had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds by missed a pair of shots around the rim, and BVU's last second-heave was off the mark.

Drey then connected on a long-range bucket to put the Beavers in front 101-100 in the first overtime; marking their first lead since the opening minute of the game.  The teams then traded buckets over the next two minutes, and a layup by the Bluejays put them in front 108-105 with 10 seconds left.  Clark misfired on a three-point attempt on BVU's next possession, but an offensive team rebound gave BVU hope.  Coach Van Haaften elected not to call a timeout and Clark took the ball out of bounds and found Drey wide open in the corner right in front of the Beaver bench as time expired forcing a second overtime.

BVU went cold from the field at the start of the second overtime as Elmhurst built a double-digit lead at 120-109 with 1:03 left.  Clark did hit a pair of late three's to get the team back within six with 34 seconds left, but Elmhurst hit its free-throws down the stretch for the 10-point win.

Clark finished the game shooting 11-of-27 overall and 6-of-18 from downtown to become the program's 28th player to reach 1,000 career points.  It was his third 30-point game of the year.  He's also one three-pointer shy of moving into a tie with Troy Ticknor (177; 2009-13) for fifth on the program's all-time three-point list.  His 14 assists give him three games this season with at least 10 assists.

Drey, meanwhile, registered his second double-double of the year, finishing 6-of-14 from the field overall and 3-of-7 from downtown.  Sean Morgan added 13 points with Ivey chipping in 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

As a team, BVU shot 49.4 percent from the field and 33 percent from downtown.  The Beavers did struggle a little bit from the free-throw line, making only 23-of-34.  The Bluejays, meanwhile, made 36-of-44.

Kyle Wuest, a preseason All-American for the Bluejays (9-1), led the way with 31 points as Kyle Crittenden added 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Buena Vista had its four-game overall win streak snapped and are now 4-5 on the year.  The team is now off for Christmas break and returns to action on December 29 for its first game of the Tampa Shootout in Tampa, Fla., against Trinity (Texas) at 6:00pm.
