Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball team held Bethany Lutheran to only eight third quarter points and outscored the Vikings by eight in the final quarter on Thursday evening en route to an 82-73 road victory.
Senior Lexi Fisher turned in a team-high 19 points on the strength of a 5-of-9 shooting performance from downtown, while also grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out three assists. Fellow senior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves made 7-of-11 shots from the field and followed with 15 points, eight boards and a game-high five blocked shots, while senior Becca Pennington added 12 points and six assists. Junior Sidney Beckman came off the bench and drilled three long range buckets to also reach double digits with 10 points.
As a team, the Beavers shot a respectable 44.6 percent from the field, including 40 percent (11-of-28) from three-point land. All that despite shooting under 60 percent from the free-throw line.
The game was back-and-forth for most of the first quarter as neither team could mount more than about a three-point lead. BVU led 18-15 closing in on two minutes left in the frame before six straight points by the Vikings gave them a three-point cushion. BVU scored five of the final seven points in the quarter to make it 23-23.
The Vikings shot nearly 53 percent from the field in the second quarter while forcing eight BVU turnovers and took a 47-42 lead into the half.
Buena Vista, however, responded after the break, holding BLC to only two made field goals the entire third quarter. The Beavers didn't exactly shoot lights out either in the period, going 0-for-9 from downtown and 4-of-8 at the free-throw line, but was able to take a 56-55 lead to the fourth.
A basket by Morgan Muhlbauer to start the final period extended the lead to 58-55 while Lacey Vokt hit a three-pointer minutes later to push the lead to six. BVU wasn't able to put away the Vikings, though, as they stayed within six for most of the quarter before free-throws at the end helped the Beavers close the door.
Haley Sandin lead Bethany Lutheran (3-7) with a game-high 25 points, while Briana Brandts followed with 14 points and a game-high 18 boards.
Buena Vista moves back above the .500 mark at 5-4 and will now be on Christmas break until returning to action on January 2 and 3 at the College of Saint Benedict Classic. It will open with Concordia-Moorhead on the 2nd at 3:00pm.
