Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball fought all the way back to force overtime against the University of Dubuque on Saturday night, but it was the Spartans pulling away late in the extra period to hand the Beavers a heartbreaking 82-73 setback.
BVU trailed by 70-67 with just over five seconds left in regulation. Senior Lacey Vokt took the inbound pass just in front of the Spartan bench and was fouled by Dubuque in an attempt to avoid her to not get a look at a game-tying three-point basket. Vokt calmly stepped to the line and hit the first free-throw attempt and intentionally missed the second. The ball bounced to the right and junior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves spun around her defender on the boxout to grab the rebound and quickly put it back in to tie things up at 70-70.
Dubuque had one last crack at a game-winning shot, but ran out of time getting the ball up the floor, sending the game into five minutes of extra play.
Sophomore Sidney Beckman put the Beavers in front 73-70 with a three-point after the teams went the first two minutes without scoring, but Dubuque scored 12 straight points, including six free-throws to secure the nine-point victory.
Both teams shot under 33 percent from the field, but the big difference in the game came at the charity stripe where the Spartans made 35-of-49 attempts, while BVU attempted only 25 and made 18.
Jasmine Demers came off the bench and scored a career-high 13 points for the Beavers, while Flynn-Graves also matched that total to go along with her 10 rebounds. Senior Lexi Fisher added 11 points, including two made three-point buckets to move her into a tie for fourth-place on the program's all-time made three-point list with 134. She also chipped in with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Senior Shelby Wiederhoeft also scored in double-figures with 10, while grabbing six rebounds.
The two teams combined for 48 turnovers, but tied at 56 on the boards.
Jenna Kotas, the league's leading scorer, led Dubuque (9-6, 3-1 IIAC) with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Buena Vista is now 5-9 overall (0-4 IIAC) and will be back on the road for a pair of contests next week, beginning with a 6:00pm tip-off at Central College (9-6, 0-4 IIAC) on Wednesday night.
