Box Score

Buena Vista erased a 15-point second half deficit to tie things up at 43-43, but it was Simpson College using a late run to open up a late double-digit lead and knock off the Beavers on Saturday afternoon inside of Cowles Fieldhouse, 62-54.

Senior Shelby Wiederhoeft helped lead BVU with her third double-double of the year, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Sophomore Sidney Beckman came off the bench to go 3-of-9 from downtown and also finish with 11 points.  Senior Lexi Fisher chipped in with a pair of three-pointers and turned in 10 points and five rebounds.

Becca Pennington added seven points and four assists, while Jasmyn Flynn-Graves totaled six points and seven rebounds.

BVU struggled offensively in the first half, shooting only 20 percent from the field.  The team trailed 11-4 in the early going before settling down and getting back within 13-12 with 14:17 left.  From there, though, the Beavers went more than 9:00 without scoring, but only trailed 20-14 with under 6:00 left after a bucket from Fisher.

The Beaver defense kept the team in the game, forcing 10 first half turnovers and holding the Storm to 37 percent shooting, BVU trailed just 25-15 at the break.

After falling behind 39-24 with five minutes gone by in the second half, BVU began to catch fire and storm their way back in the game, using a key 19-4 run to pull even at 43-43 with Jessica Jaeger scoring eight points during the run and Flynn-Graves with six.

It was still a two-point game with five minutes to play before the Storm rolled off 10 straight points to build a 58-46 lead with 2:32 left.

BVU kept things interesting down the stretch, getting as close as 59-54 with 21 seconds left, but Simpson was able to convert its free-throws in the closing seconds to hang on for the eight-point victory.

Buena Vista dips to 5-8 on the year (0-2 IIAC) and will get set to host Coe College in its first home conference game of the year on Wednesday night, January 14th at 6:00pm.
