Box Score The sixth-seeded Buena Vista women's basketball team was seconds away from a trip into the Iowa Conference Tournament championship game, but Coe College hit an off-balance jumper with just five seconds left to top the Beavers on Thursday night, 65-64.
The game was back-and-forth most of the way, including the final minutes of the second half. BVU built a 64-61 lead before a bucket by the Kohawks made it a one-point game with 1:54 to go. From there, neither team was able to find the basket until the final points.
BVU had the ball with 44 seconds to go and a fresh shot clock after a jump ball, but turned it back over just after the inbounds. Coe then got a big offensive rebound at the top of the key with 35 seconds to go, and after a pair of timeouts, the Kohawks threw it inbounds with 15 seconds left before taking and hitting the game-winner with five ticks left.
Buena Vista led for most of the first half, including an eight-point lead (24-16) with 7:56 left. Coe then rallied to get back within 31-30, but the Beavers got a bucket from Kies and took a slim 33-32 lead into the break.
Kies turned in a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and finishes her illustrious BVU career with 1,230 points. Her two three-pointer tonight give her 195. Shelby Wiederhoeft and Jasmyn Flynn-Graves each followed with 12 points for the Beavers, while Lexi Fisher added 11.
Lacey Vokt grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds, defensively, as BVU out-rebounded the Kohawks, 42-28.
BVU finished the game shooting 45.6 percent from the field, including 6-of-15 from long range. Coe shot 40.3 percent overall and made 8-of-22 from downtown.
The Beavers concluded their season at 12-15 overall, and the game officially marks the end of the careers for Kies, Malarie Gilley and Alex Lynott.
