Box Score Trailing by 20 points at halftime, the Buena Vista men's basketball team came all the way back to take the lead in the second half, but Central was able to pull away late for a 92-78 victory over the Beavers in Pella on Wednesday night.
Junior Tyler Kastantin turned in his first career double-digit contest and led the Beavers with 20 points, including six three-point buckets. He came in with only four three-point makes all season. Senior Michael Kaufmann followed with five long range baskets and added a season-high 17 points, while junior Cole Darrow chimed in with 15 points.
As a team, the Beavers shot 13-of-30 from downtown and 45 percent overall (30-of-66). They took only nine free-throw attempts the entire way, making five.
Kastantin began the furious rally to start the second, drilling a three-pointer just seconds into the period to spark a 17-0 run over the first four minutes.
After seeing the Dutch push the margin back to seven, BVU hung tough, as another Kastantin triple made it a 62-61 contest. Kaufmann's three-pointer midway through gave the Beavers a slim 65-64 lead - their first since early in the first half.
Central, which made 15 three-pointers of its own, responded with one to get the lead back and it would never trail again.
The lead grew back to double-digits at 76-65 with 5:06 to go, and the Beavers weren't able to get any closer than nine from there.
Matt Greenfield led four players in double-figures for the Dutch, who improve to 16-6 overall 9-2 (IIAC).
The loss by BVU drops the Beavers back to .500 at 11-11 (6-5 IIAC). The team will now travel to Loras College on Saturday and look to complete the season sweep of the Duhawks, who upset #23 Dubuque on Wednesday night, 71-70.
