Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball team played the final game of the 2014 calendar year by traveling to Dordt College on Wednesday afternoon, but the Beavers had their late comeback bid fall just short as the Defenders hung on for a 73-67 victory.
Junior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves turned in 12 points to help lead BVU, while senior Lacey Vokt followed with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Sidney Beckman drilled a trio of three-pointers to add nine points, as Jasmine Demers and Lexi Fisher both totaled eight points. Jordan Tynes came off the bench and turned in seven rebounds, defensively.
BVU shot 32 percent from the floor, but made only 8-of-30 shots from downtown (26 percent).
The Beavers led early on before the Defenders used a run to take a 26-20 lead and force a BVU timeout. The Beavers were able to keep things close by closing the gap to 32-29 at the half.
Dordt began the second half strong and built a double-digit lead, including their largest at 49-33 with 12:47 remaining. BVU rode the ship and kept the margin close to 10 the rest of the way.
Despite trailing 65-55 with 3:22 left, BVU was able to put together a nice rally at the end to make things interesting.
BVU got within five after a Jasmine Demers bucket and free-throw, and after forcing a turnover on the inbounds pass, Fisher drilled a three from the corner just in front of the Beaver bench to make it a 67-64 game with 28 seconds left.
Dordt, after allowing BVU to get back into the game with missed freethrows, was able to sink the attempts in the closing seconds, while Beavers committed a pair of turnovers to wrap things up.
The Defenders shot 37 percent from the field and went 25-of-37 at the charity stripe.
Buena Vista dips to 5-6 overall and will now have a week to prepare for its Iowa Conference opener at defending IIAC champion, Loras College, next Wednesday night in Dubuque at 6:00pm.
