Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball team built a 40-25 halftime lead and never looked back, as the Beavers picked up a key 75-64 road win at Luther College on Wednesday night.
Susan Kies turned in a game-high 20 points for the Beavers which moved her up two spots and into 12th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,102 career points. She also added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Lexi Fisher made 6-of-13 shots from the field and followed with 17 points, to go along with five rebounds.
Malarie Gilley added another double-double, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three blocks, which moved her into a tie for third on the program's all-time blocks list with 99. Shelby Widerhoeft narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and game-high 13 rebounds. Sidney Beckman came off the bench for BVU and also totaled 10 points, including a pair of three-point buckets.
As a team, BVU outrebounded the Norse, 38-28, while holding them to only 30.8 percent shooting.
Luther held a 17-12 lead with 9:05 to play in the opening half before the Beavers went on a game-changing 13-0 run, including back-to-back three-point buckets from Beckman and Lexie Moreno, to put BVU in front.
Vokt put the Beavers in front by double digits for the first time at 31-20 with her layup at the 3:17 mark of the half, and BVU would lead by double figures for nearly the rest of the way. Kies hit one of her three long range buckets with 45 seconds left to give the Beavers the 15-point halftime lead.
Five minutes into the second half, she connected on yet another three-pointer to push the lead to 21 at 50-29.
Luther wouldn't go away, though, as the Norse slowly clawed their way back to within 10 at 65-55 with just over three minutes left. Vokt, however, sank to free-throws to push it back to a 12-point lead, and Luther got no closer than nine with 12 seconds left. BVU put the game away at the charity stripe by making 11-of-14 down the stretch.
With back-to-back wins, Buena Vista closes the first half of the Iowa Conference schedule at 8-10 overall (2-5 IIAC) and will look to make it three straight win they begin the second half of that schedule on the road at Wartburg College this Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm. The Beavers will be looking to avenge a tough 82-77 overtime loss to the Knights just last Wednesday in Storm Lake.
