Box Score Shelby Wiederhoeft turned in a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead four Beavers in double figures, but the Buena Vista women's basketball team couldn't overcome an early deficit as it fell on the road at Simpson on Wednesday night, 93-69.
Wiederhoeft connected on 7-of-9 shot attempts from the field and made all eight free-throw attempts en route to her seconds straight double-double and sixth overall. Malarie Gilley went 7-of-10 at the charity stripe and followed with 13 points and seven boards, while Susan Kies and Lexi Fisher each made a pair of three-pointers and chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
BVU shot just 31 percent overall from the field (20-of-64), including a 6-of-25 effort from downtown. It did make 23-of-31 at the free-throw line.
Simpson jumped out to an early 22-9 lead thanks in large part to a 5-of-8 start from down town. The Storm later built their largest lead of the first half (46-25) with two minutes left and took a 46-31 advantage into halftime.
Wiederhoeft's bucket to start the second half got BVU as close as 13 before back-to-back three-pointers by Simpson pushed its lead back to 19 at 52-33.
BVU was held to nine points over the first nine minutes of the second half as the Storm's lead grew to 69-40 with 11:03 left and they never looked back from there.
Simpson (7-7, 2-1 IIAC) had 12 different players score on the night, as the team finished the contest shooting over 49 percent from the field (12-of-27 from downtown).
Buena Vista (6-8, 0-3 IIAC) will look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon when it travels to the University of Dubuque (10-4, 3-0 IIAC) for a 2:00pm tip-off.
