Cobbers Edge Beavers 21-13 in Home Opener for BVU

Box Score

Concordia-Moorhead got touchdown plays of 85 and 42 yards, respectively, in the first quarter, and that proved to be the difference in the ball game, as the Cobbers hung on in the end to top BVU, 21-13, on Saturday afternoon.  The game was the 2013 home opener for the Beavers.

Trailing 21-13 with just under three minutes to play, the Beaver defense came up big down the stretch, forcing a big Concorida fumble deep in BVU territory that was recovered at the Buena Vista 19 yard-line.

BVU got the benefit of a roughing the passer penalty on the drive's first play, and then quarterback Bobby Brown completed a big 14-yard pass to sophomore Jalen Henningsen later in the drive, getting BVU to the Cobber 42.

On the very next play, Brown appeared to have completed a pass to Gunner Gilland along the far sideline that would have put the Beavers near the Cobber 20, but the call was overturned after a brief discussion, and the Beavers were forced into a 2nd-and-10.  Two plays later and forcing a 4th-and-6 at the Concordia 38, Brown was looking to find Gilland again, this time over the middle of the field, but the pass was broken up and no pass interference penalty was called, giving the Cobbers the ball on downs.  They then took one kneel-down to close out the game.

Concordia got on the board early in the first quarter, getting an 85-yard catch and run for the game's first score less than five minutes into play.

The Beavers cut the deficit in half with just under two minutes left in the quarter when junior Dylan Barrett drove his way up the Concordia sideline from 12 yards out and his first rushing TD of the year.

The Cobbers came right back on the ensuing drive, needing just three plays and 42 seconds to get a 42-yard touchdown run and take a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

BVU then had the ball inside of the Cobber 10 yard line after a 64-yard pass to Gilland, but a fumble nullified the drive, as Concordia recovered.

As it did for a good part of the day, the Beaver defense came up big again, benefiting from a fumble and a partially blocked kick that gave the offense good field position at the Cobber 40.  That drive, however, stalled as well, as a 27-yard field goal attempt missed wide right.

After a Mason Nielsen interception deep in BVU territory, the Beaver offense marched down the field and got into field goal range with the wind at its back, and freshman Tyler Stolen nailed a big 46-yard field goal as time expired in the half, pulling BVU within 14-10 at the break.

The Cobbers then built its largest lead of the game at 21-10 with a minute left in the third after a five-yard touchdown plunge, which followed an 18-yard pass completion on 4th-and-3.

Stolen drilled his second field goal of the game, this one from 34 yards out to pull the Beavers with eight at 21-13 with just under eight minutes left before, but that ultimatley proved to be the game's final score.

Brown matched his career-high with 20 completions on 38 attempts for 266 yards.  He was 10-of-14 alone for 166 yards in the first half.  Henningsen hauled in a game-high six catches for 93 yards, while junior Adam Cave caught five for 42.

Barrett carried the ball 22 times for 93 yards, while Brown added 33 yards on 11 attempts.

Defensively, senior Brady Randall turned in nine total tackles for BVU, followed by Tanner Collins and Beau Van Wechel with seven apiece.  Nielsen and Derek Schwartz each tallied one interception in the game to help lead a Beaver defense that forced four turnovers in the game.

Buena Vista is 0-2 on the year and will remain at home again next week to host #8 Bethel University at 1:00pm.  That game is also the annual Take a Kid to the Game Day.
