Beaver Men to Tip-off Season Tonight at Augsburg

Box Score

The 2013-14 campaign is about to tip-off for the Buena Vista men's basketball team, as the Beavers will take the court tonight on the road at Augsburg College in a 7:30pm tip-off.

BVU, with four starters and seven letterwinners back from a season ago, will look to take the momentum it gained from going 19-7 overall and tying for the Iowa Conference championship with an 11-3 mark a season ago.  It was the team's eighth IIAC championship under head coach Brian Van Haaften.  Junior Cole Darrow, a Second Team All-IIAC selection last season, is the team's leading returning scorer after finishing second last year at 11.7ppg.  He was also second in rebounding at 5.1rpg.

The Auggies will take the court for the first time as well, as they are coming off a solid 21-7 season and a third-place finish in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after a 10-6 mark.  The team has the second-highest win total in the MIAC since the start of the 2008-09 season. Junior Parker Hines is the team's leading returning scorer after finishing third on the team in 2012-13 by averaging 10.2ppg.  Sophomore Brett Rasmussen averaged 9.8ppg and shot 49.1 percent from the field en route to being named the D3hoops.com All-West Region Rookie of the Year.

BVU averaged 75.3ppg in 2012-13, while the Auggies turned in 72.7ppg.

Following tonight's contest, the Beavers will travel to Gustavus Adolphus for a non-conference contest with the Gusties.

BVU edged GAC in St. Peter, Minn., 69-66, last season.  Wes Nordquist scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for BVU.  Brett Heitjamp added 12 points and six rebounds.

The Gusties also open their season tonight with a home contest against IIAC foe, Simpson College.  Gustavus finished last season at 13-11 and 11-9 (MIAC), but failed to make the conference tournament for the first time in 12 years.  The team does have nine letterwinners back this year, and that group will look to replace 65 percent of the team's scoring that was lost due to graduation following the 2012-13 campaign.  Senior Jordan Dick is the team's top returning scorer after turning in 7.4 points, while averaging nearly 29 minutes per contest last season as a junior.

Tip-off of with the Gusties is set for 7:00pm.
