Aaron Poor Bear

Aaron Poor Bear returns to  Buena Vista University for his fifth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach. He has more than 15 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels. He was part of the 2018-2019 & 2019-2020 seasons for the Beavers, where the teams combined record was 29-22, including an A-R-C record of 14-18. 

Coach Poor Bear's latest coaching stint before coming over to BVU was his role as head coach at Minnesota West Community & Technical College. In the 2017-18 season, he led the Bluejays to its first National Tournament appearance  in program history. Along with a 19-13 overall record, his team won the conference tournament championship. Coach Poor Bear received the MCAC and Region IV Coach of the Year awards. His team included a First Team All-Conference player and two Second Team All-Conference players. 

Coach Poor Bear received his Masters Degree in Recreational & Sports Sciences from Ohio University in 2020 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from South Dakota State University in 2002. He lives in Storm Lake with his wife (Shannon) and their three children.
