Baseball Drops Series Opener to Loras 15-7

Sophomore Dylan Johnson awaits a pitch against Loras College.

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March, 27, 2026) - The Buena Vista baseball team continued its homestand on Friday evening by hosting Loras College to begin a three-game weekend series, but it was the Duhakws using a six-run fourth inning to spark them to a 15-7 victory.

BVU left the bases loaded in the first and stranded another runner in the third to keep the game scoreless heading to the fourth. That's when Loras broke through with six runs and four hits, including a pair of triples, to go up 6-0.

Freshman Benjamin Byington got the Beavers on the board in the bottom half with a double past the first baseman that scored Jack Schmaltz before Reid Jacob added an RBI groundout to make it 6-2.

The Duhawks scored three times in the sixth, including a two-run home run to right, that extended their lead to 9-2. Buena Vista, however, came right back in the bottom half and pushed across four runs, highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of sophomore Dylan Johnson that made it 9-6. The home run was Johnson's team-leading fifth of the year.

Loras (8-9, 2-2 A-R-C) came right back in the seventh by putting up three more runs and BVU was unable to get any closer. Both teams traded runs in the eight before the Duhawks tacked on two more in the ninth.

The two teams combined for 27 hits in the game with Loras chalking up nine extra-base hits and the Beavers six.

Byington led the way for BVU by going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Kaden Struck was 2-for-2 with a double and also walked three times. Cooper Sobeck chipped in with a pair of hits, including his third triple of the year.

Junior Ean McDaniel (1-3) got the start and pitched five innings, allowing six runs (four earned) and seven hits while striking out four. A combined six other pitchers were used over the final four innings.

Buena Vista is now 5-13 on the year (1-2 A-R-C). The team closes out the weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Between games, the BVU baseball alumni in attendance will be recognized as part of Baseball Alumni Day  festivities.
