Softball Edged in a Pair of Non-Conference Games by Mt. Marty

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 24, 2026) - The Buena Vista softball team was right back out on the diamond on Tuesday afternoon to host Mt. Marty in a non-conference doubleheader, but the Beavers came up on the short end of both games, falling by scores of 5-0 and 3-1.

The Lancers got a sacrifice fly in the first inning to start the scoring and then tacked on two more runs in the second for a 3-0 lead. They extended the margin to four with an RBI triple in the fourth before capping the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.

Junior right hander Kali Irlmeier made the start inside the circle for BVU and pitched four innings and was charged with four runs and five hits. Rylie Garner came on and pitched the final three frames and allowed just the solo home run and struck out one.

Junior Jillian Garcia and sophomore Jordan Fabirkiewicz each singled once for the team's only two hits.

Hanna Merron and Lindy Nelson, BVU softball vs. Mount Marty

Mt. Marty broke the scoreless game in the third with an RBI groundout before BVU pushed across its first run of the day in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from freshman Hanna Merron. That's how things stayed until the top of the seventh when the Lancers got an RBI triple followed by a run-scoring double for the game's final score.

The Beavers threatened in the bottom of the seventh by putting runners at second and third with two outs before Garcia was robbed of a game-tying base hit by the Lancers' second baseman who dove and snagged her line drive back up the middle for the final out of the game.

Freshman Jaylynn Craun (2-for-3) had two of the team's six hits in the game and also scored its only run. Merron was 1-for-2 with a walk and the one RBI.

Ella Brown was strong inside the circle and was cruising right along until the seventh. She was charged with all three runs and scattered 10 hits while walking three and striking out four over 6.1 innings. Kenzie Dumbaugh came on and pitched to the final two batters of the seventh inning and got them each to fly out.

Buena Vista falls to 5-15 on the year and is set to continue its homestand on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Grinnell College. First pitch of game one is at 1 p.m.
