HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 10, 2026) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team got back into the win column on Tuesday morning with a strong 5-2 victory over Mount St. Mary's (Md) as it continued its competition schedule during spring break.

Mount St. Mary's claimed the doubles point to get the match started. BVU did get a hard fought 6-3 win by the tandem of at No. 3.

Despite a straight-set loss by Nick Hiney at No.1 singles, BVU was able to bounce back and was strong throughout the rest of the singles line-up to earn the win. Bryson Frederickson notched a thrilling comeback win at No. 3 after dropping the opening set 6-1. He came back and won in a tiebreaker in the second set (7-4) to win 7-6 and then squeaked out a thrilling 11-9 victory in the third set tiebreaker.

Ryan Smith at No. 4 singles responded nicely after dropping his opening set 6-0. He came back and won 6-4 and 11-9 earn the third set tiebreaker.

Tyler Harger, Jeb Bathrick and  Owen Stansberry each won in straight sets.

"This was a great team win from top to bottom, and definitely needed for our piece of mind," said BVU head coach Brett Groen. "Wwe started super slow in doubles, and in the first sets of our singles matches, but we have never fought harder and finished more matches the way did later on in the day."

"I can't be more proud of how Bryson and Ryan fought back after each dropping their first sets and having to go in to really tight tie breaks for the third sets," added Groen "Bryson has been so close so many times before, so watching him finish the third set the way he did was an incredible sight to see. Tyler came back and played probably his smartest and most consistent singles of his career.  His win started the domino effect for the rest of the singles players. Jeb and Owen also took care of business and really helped to slam the door shut on the match. It was great to get back to the win column as a team, and hope to add one more win before we head back home."

The Beavers improve to 2-4 overall and will take on Lancaster Bible College on Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m. (CT) in what will be the team's final match of the spring trip.
