Men's Basketball Wins 72-71 Thriller over Simpson on Alumni Day

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Feb. 7, 2026) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team needed a win in a big way on Saturday evening as it hosted Simpson College, and the Beavers got just that after a pair of shot attempts at the rim by the Storm rimmed off as time expired, giving them a 72-71 victory.

BVU scored six straight points to build its largest lead at 72-66 with 2:22 remaining and went scoreless the rest of the way. The Storm had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with 90 seconds to go, but missed the front end of a two-shot attempt that left the score at 72-71. Overall, the game featured 11 ties and 15 lead changes.

Junior Carter Sievers helped lead the way for the Beavers with 20 points and made 9-of-10 at the free-throw line. Sophomore jayden Brink followed right behind with 19 points while junior Kyle Sternberg and senior Jackson Jones each added 14. Sternberg notched his second career double-double by also hauling in 10 boards.  

The Beavers shot over 52 percent from the field in the first half but still managed to make more free-throws (13) than field goals (12) in the half. The team cooled off slightly in the second half from the floor but continued to find its way to the charity stripe where it finished the night making a season-high 27-of-30.

Simpson shot 40 percent from the field overall and connected on 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from downtown. BVU held a 34-28 edge on the glass.

The Storm had three players score in double figures, led by 18 from Calix Cahill. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. 

Buena Vista improves to 12-9 overall (5-7 A-R-C) and into a tie for fifth with the Storm who drop to 8-13 (5-7 A-R-C). The Beavers host Wartburg College (12-10, 4-9 A-R-C) on Wednesday night (Feb. 11) looking to complete the season-sweep with a win.
