SHAWNEE, Kan. (Feb. 28, 2026) - The Buena Vista baseball team looked to take the weekend series against Saint John's University (MN) with a win on Saturday afternoon, but a big 14-run fifth inning by the Johnnies sent them to an 18-0 victory over the Beavers and take 2-of-3 in the series.
Saint John's scored single runs in both the third and fourth innings for an early 2-0 lead, but then took full control in the fifth by scoring 14 times on only eight hits. Two of the big blows were a three-run double that made it 7-0 and a two-run double later in the inning that extended it to a 13-0 margin. The Johnnies capped the scoring with two more runs in the eighth.
BVU couldn't string enough base runners together despite ending with seven hits.
Cooper Sobeck was 2-for-4 with a triple and
Connor Duong finished 2-for-3 with a triple to lead the Beavers at the plate. Jacob Reid had one stolen base.
Carson Brachtel made his first career varsity start on the mound and pitched four-plus innings and was charged with six runs (four earned) and five hits while striking out three.
Kalab Kuhl came on in relief and shut the door with a solid 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Saint John's (2-1) had eight players record at least two hits in the game but only had five of its 15 total hits go for extra-bases.
Buena Vista is now 2-4 overall and will be off until it heads on a spring break trip to play three games in Illinois and three more in Memphis, Tenn., starting next Friday, March 6 against Webster University in Sauget, Ill., at noon.
