Men's Basketball Wins 71-69 Thriller over Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Jan. 3, 2026) - Junior Carter Sievers scored 22 points and made the go-ahead layup with four seconds remaining that gave the Buena Vista men's basketball team a thrilling 71-69 road victory at the University of Dubuque on Saturday evening.

Sievers was 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown. Sophomore Jayden Brink also made three long range buckets and was 9-of-16 overall and also finished with 22 points. Senior Keaton Flaherty added 10 points and three assists. Junior Kyle Sternberg chipped in with eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Buena Vista maintained a six-point margin throughout the first part of the first half with the Spartans not taking their first lead until a three-point from Grady Thompson made it 20-18 midway through. Thompson went on to make five treys from downtown for Dubuque and turned in a game-high 33 points.

The Beavers got the lead right back four minutes later on a layup from Brink, and the two teams went into the half tied at 33-33.

The Beavers built a 12-point lead midway through the second half before the Spartans went on a 15-5 run over the next six minutes to make it a 66-64 contest with under three minutes to go. BVU remained in front by by five but Dubuque kept things close and got a game-tying three-pointer from Thompson with 25 seconds to play. After a timeout, the Beavers brought the ball down the length of the court and got the go-ahead bucket from Sievers with four seconds on the clock. Dubuque had one last heave from downtown at the buzzer to win it but it was off target.

Buena Vista finished the game shooting over 45 percent from the field and made 10-of-31 from long range. Dubuque (8-4, 1-2 A-R-C) was 6-of-23 from behind the arc and shot 42 percent from the floor overall.

BVU went on to snap its seven-game overall losing streak to the Spartans. It is also the first win for the Beavers inside of the Stoltz Center since February 2, 2022 when it topped Dubuque 65-60.

The win moves BVU's record to 9-4 overall (2-2 A-R-C) and the Beavers will continue conference play on Jan. 10 at Loras College with tip-off at 4 p.m.
