Kyle Sternberg 10, but the Buena Vista men's basketball team was held to 30 percent shooting in the second half at Coe College on Wednesday night, as the Kohawks were able to hold off BVU 75-66.
Sievers shot 5-of-14 overall from the field but was able to get to the free-throw line and convert 8-of-9. As a team, the Beavers made 20-of-23. The first half was back-and-forth between two teams tied in the conference standings entering the game. Neither side was able to go on any sort of run to build a lead. BVU held the largest margin at five points on multiple occasions. The Kohawks got a three-point bucket from Zach Strauss with under a minute to play in the half that matched their largest lead at 35-32 before Sievers came back with a layup at the other end that made it a 35-34 game at the half.
Coe used the long ball to help build the separation in the second half, burying 6-of-11 from behind the arc, including four straight midway through that made it a 62-45 Kohawk lead. The home team maintained its cushion and pushed it up to as much as 19 with under 5:00 to play before the Beavers tried to make a late run but it was too-little-too late.
Kanyon Bryte led the way for Coe (13-7, 5-5 A-R-C) with 20 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 at the free-throw line. Strauss made a game-high six from long range and finished with 18 points.
Buena Vista dips to 11-8 overall (4-6 A-R-C) and looks to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 31, by hosting the University of Dubuque at 4 p.m.
