Multiple Top-3 Finishes for BVU Women during Dennis Young Classic

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 24, 2026) - The Buena Vista women's track & field team was in action on its home surface on Saturday, hosting the annual Dennis Young Classic inside of the Lamberti Recreation Center, and would finish with multiple top-3 overall finishes.

Junior Megan Bakke captured a runner-up finish in the 800m run in what turned out to be a thrilling finish. She ran a time of 2:24.12 and was edged out at the finish line by only 0.05 seconds by Northwestern College's Macy Schroeder.

Freshman Hailey Hearting had herself a personal best day by claiming fourth overall in the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.79 seconds which was a half-second faster than her first outing back in December at the SDSU Holiday Open. A bit later on in the day, she captured an eighth-place finish in the 400m run at 1:04. Her day began in the field events with a third-place performance in the long jump. She recorded her best jump of the event at 4.96m on her final attempt in the finals.

In the shot put, it was junior Payton Schermerhorn taking second with a season-best heave of 12.28m with freshman Emma Wiebold right behind in fourth with a mark of 10.92m. Schermerhorn also came in fourth in the weight throw with a new personal best toss of 14.35 (47'1") which surpasses her previous best by nearly five inches.

The success for the team continued in the field events as Ava Mills took home third in the high jump by clearing 1.52m. Later in the day, Mills also secured a new personal best time in the 60m hurdles in 10.05 which placed her sixth.

Next up for the Beavers will be the Grinnell College Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31. Action inside of The Bear Recreation and Athletic Center is set to get underway at 10 a.m.
