Carter Sievers scored a career-high 29 points, sophomore
Jayden Brink added 21, and the Buena Vista men's basketball team used a 56.5 percent shooting performance en route to a strong 77-65 American Rivers Conference road victory at Wartburg College on Wednesday night.
Sievers finished the night shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 9-of-10 at the stripe. He made 4-of-5 from downtown and is shooting over 50 percent from behind the arc for the year. He has now scored at least 20 points in four of the last five games overall and is averaging 20.5ppg during conference play which ranks third. Brink leads all A-R-C players averaging 22.6ppg. He finished tonight's game shooting 8-of-14 from the field, 2-of-5 from downtown, and made all three at the free-throw line.
Junior
Kyle Sternberg was the other Beaver to reach double figures by scoring 11 points, to go along with a team-leading seven rebounds and four assists. Sievers also dished out four dimes and grabbed six boards.
BVU made 13 field goals in each half and shot better than 54 percent in both periods. The team made 6-of-8 from long range in the second half after going 5-of-12 during the opening 20 minutes.Â
Wartburg's only lead of the game was a 2-0 but the Beavers were never able to break the game entirely open. BVU's largest lead of the night came with under one minute left in the game when it when up 75-61 after a pair of Sievers free-throws. Brink buried a three-pointer eight minutes into the first half to give the Beavers their first double-digit advantage of the game at 16-6. It led by as many as 13 in the half after a long range bucket from sophomore
Adam Bryte with 8:01 to go. The Knights did claw their way back and cut the Beaver lead down to 36-32 at the half.
A layup to begin the second half for Wartburg made it a two-point contest but Sievers then went on to score 10 straight points for BVU, including a pair of three-point makes that kept the team in front at 50-41. Senior
Jackson Jones drilled a three-pointer to push it back to a double-digit lead with 14 minutes remaining. The Knights cut the deficit back down into single digits near the eight-minute mark and got as close as four at 65-61 with under five minutes to play, but a three-pointer by Sternberg sparked a pivotal 10-0 run by the Beavers over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach with 59 seconds to play.
Luke Ladwig turned in 17 points and six assists to help lead Wartburg (10-5, 2-4 A-R-C) with Ethan Yungtum adding 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Buena Vista improves to 10-5 on the year (3-3 A-R-C) and is back at home to Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 17, to host Luther College (6-8, 1-4 A-R-C) at 4 p.m.
