Volleyball Edged 3-1 in A-R-C Opener by Simpson

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 24, 2025) - The Buena Vista volleyball team opened American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday night by hosting Simpson College, but the Beavers came up short in what was a thrilling 3-1 match inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

Freshman Charley Hernandez turned in a match-high 13 kills and a career-high 23 digs to help lead the Beavers while sophomore Ashlyne Havermann also added a double-double by matching her career-high with 10 kills and adding 15 digs. Junior Sydney Meints just missed out on double-digits with nine kills of her own.

Sophomore Merced Ramirez dished out a match-high 36 assists, sophomore Genevieve Livingston tallied a career-high 13 digs and freshman Keylee Gregg posted nine digs and four ace serves.

The two teams were going back-and-forth throughout the start of the match before Simpson broke open a 13-10 lead by scoring 12 of the final 16 points to win 25-14. It turned out to be a wild second set as BVU was looking to pull even at one set apiece. BVU led 5-1 early on, and after the Storm rallied to tie it up at 9-9, the Beavers later rolled off four straight to make it 16-12. Simpson again rallied to tie it up at 18-18 but BVU had another answer and faced set point after a kill from Meints. Simpson, however, never went away and took advantage of a serving error to follow with an ace and back-to-back attack errors by the Beavers to win 26-24.

Buena Vista didn't back down and came back with a strong third set with 14 kills and only six errors. The team used a bign 8-0 run midway through that gave it a 20-15 cushion. After Simpson pulled within 21-19, the Beavers closed strong with kills by Hernandez and Havermann as well as an ace serve by Havermann. The team closed the set with a kill from Meints that gave it a 25-20 victory.

Each team used a run at the start of the fourth set and then it was back-and-forth. Simpson (12-3, 1-0 A-R-C) broke a 13-13 tie with three straight points but was never able to pull away. BVU stayed within 19-16 late before the Storm closed the match out by scoring six of the final seven points to win 25-17.

Buena Vista is now 5-9 overall (0-1 A-R-C) and travels to Nebraska Wesleyan (10-3, 0-1 A-R-C) next Tuesday, Sept. 30, for an A-R-C showdown starting at 6 p.m.
