The two teams were going back-and-forth throughout the start of the match before Simpson broke open a 13-10 lead by scoring 12 of the final 16 points to win 25-14. It turned out to be a wild second set as BVU was looking to pull even at one set apiece. Simpson again rallied to tie it up at 18-18 but BVU had another answer and faced set point after a kill from Meints. Simpson, however, never went away and took advantage of a serving error to follow with an ace and back-to-back attack errors by the Beavers to win 26-24.
Buena Vista didn't back down and came back with a strong third set with 14 kills and only six errors. The team used a bign 8-0 run midway through that gave it a 20-15 cushion. After Simpson pulled within 21-19, the Beavers closed strong with kills by Hernandez and Havermann as well as an ace serve by Havermann. The team closed the set with a kill from Meints that gave it a 25-20 victory.
