Women's Tennis Drops a Trio of Matches to begin Season

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Aug. 30-31, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's tennis team was on the road at Cornell College to begin its fall 2025 schedule over the weekend, but the Beavers came up short in a trio of non-conference matches over the two days.

On Friday, the team began the season taking on the host Rams and falling 7-0 before it battled closely against UW-Stout before coming up short, 5-2. Then on Sunday, the Beavers closed out the trip with a tough 7-0 loss to Edgewood College.

The first victory of the year for the team came at No. 2 doubles with sisters Hailey and Abby Meseck teaming up to win their match 6-4. UW-Stout hung on at No. 1 to win a tight 7-5 contest before claiming the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 3. During singles play, the Beavers were victorious at both No. 1 with Hannah Higgins and No. 2 with Taylor Fritz as each came out with a three-set tiebreaker victory. Both wins came down to the wire in the third set with both Higgins and Fritz winning 11-9.

“The ladies did very well for their first couple matches of the season,” said BVU head coach Dan Taylor. “For the majority of our team it was their first college competition, so they are still getting used to faster pace and a higher level of play. The Stout match was very competitive, and was winnable, as we were close to getting the doubles point and at No. 6 singles as well. Hannah showed incredible determination and patience, battling in very long points. Taylor stayed calm and confident, staying aggressive on big points, and not letting a couple unconverted match points earlier discourage her. Overall, I'm pleased with how our young team competed.”

Buena Vista (0-3) will play its home opener and also begin American Rivers Conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 2 by hosting Central College in a match that begins on Buntrock Tennis Courts at 4 p.m.
