Men's Tennis Closes Season with 5-2 Road Win at Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. (May 2, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team concluded its season in a big way with a strong 5-2 non-conference road victory at Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon.

The two teams finally got to face each other after the originally scheduled match was postponed earlier this week due to inclement weather.

BVU notched the point in doubles play after winning all three match-ups. Dalton Pregon and Kaiden DePascale teammed up to win 6-2 at No. 1 doubles for their first win of the season in three tries while the No. 3 tandem of Tyler Harger and Nick Hiney also notched a 6-2 triumph to end the year at 2-0. Brock Bruns and Ryan Webb teamed up for the third time this season and would secure a 6-0 shutout and finish the year at 2-1.

Three of the six doubles matches went to third set tiebreakers with DePascale winning the only one for the Beavers. He dropped the opening set, 7-6 before bouncing back in convincing fashion with a 6-2 victory. It was a thrilling tiebreaker with the sophomore pulling through for the 12-10 win and ended the year at 3-11.

Ryan Webb was edged in the third set tiebreaker (1-6, 6-4, 9-11) and he ends his final collegiate campaign at 5-7 on the year. Bryson Fredericksen also dropped a thrilling three-set match at No. 6 by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 8-10. He ends the year at 4-8 in singles play.

Bruns had a stellar final showing in his singles outing by not allowing a point with a straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 victory to go 9-8 on the year. Pregon notched a straight set victory as well by scores of 6-2, 7-5 en route to his sixth win of the year. Tyler Harger completed the line-up with a win of his own at No. 5 by scores of 6-0, 7-5. He wraps up his sophomore campaign at 7-8.

"I'm so incredibly proud of the way that our seniors went out fighting today win or lose, it was just a great way for their incredible careers to have wrapped up," said BVU head coach Brett Groen. "All three seniors had a hand in winning today's match, and considering it was finals week and we did not practice much this week because of busy class schedules, it was great to see the way that we fought and played hard today. Kaiden had a great come-from-behind win at number one singles, and he continues to improve and gain confidence with each of the matches that he played at number one. Tyler also had to come back late in the second set to finish off his match and Brock probably played some of his best singles of his career today. He played relaxed, smart, and was hitting incredibly effective that started in doubles and continued right into singles for him to get his straight to set win at number three singles.

As a team, the Beavers went 21-29 in doubles matches for the year while also securing 38 singles victories. It concludes the year at 8-11 overall which is the program's highest single-season win total since 2013 (10 wins).
