Miller Advances to 800m Final with Fastest Qualifying Time

GENEVA, Ohio (May 23, 2025) - Buena Vista fifth-year senior Kyle Miller ran his preliminary 800m run on Friday afternoon at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships and after narrowly missing out during his indoor run, he left little doubt this time around by posting the fastest overall qualifying time among the three heats with a time of 1:50.88.

Miller gained control after nearly the first 200 meters and never looked back. He began to pull away after the first lap and built nearly a 15 meter lead heading into the final home stretch. He was able to hold off a couple late surges behind him and won the second heat by about 0.3 seconds.

Among the field is junior Cael Shoemann of UW-La Crosse, who swept both the indoor and outdoor national titles a year ago. Schoemann won the first heat and finished with the ninth fastest qualifying time of 1:52.25.

Miller is one of three individuals from the American Rivers Conference to advance into the 10-member final on Saturday, May 24 at 1:50 p.m. CST.
