LA CROSSE, Wis. (May 17, 2025) - The Buena Vista baseball team saw its season came to an end on Saturday night following a 22-8 loss to Claremont-Mudd Scripps at the NCAA Regional Tournament played inside of Copeland Park.

Just like it did during the win over the Beavers on Friday afternoon, the Stags used the long ball to break open what was an 8-8 midway through. BVU hit its first homerun of the regional when senior Evan Taylor launched a three-run shot over the fence in right centerfield that put the Beavers back in front at 8-6.

CMS came back in the top of the fourth with two runs to pull even at 8-8 and then regained the lead in the fifth with a grand slam from Andrew Mazzone that made it 12-8. It was Mazzone's second home run of the game and the fourth he hit against BVU in the tournament.

BVU just couldn't get the big hit down the stretch when they needed it and the Stags would go on to plate 10 runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

Taylor finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. His double to lead off the bottom of the first was his 26th two-bagger this season which sets a new single-season BVU record, surpassing Neil Marshall's previous mark of 25 set back in 2016.

Senior Joel Garcia had three hits and a stolen base while freshman Cooper Sobeck doubled and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Overall, the Beavers turned in 11 hits and stranded six runners on base.

Freshman Dylan Johnson, who got save against Bethany Lutheran earlier in the day, turned around made his first collegiate start and pitched 4.0 innings while being charged with 11 runs and 11 hits en route to his first loss of the year (4-1).

Buena Vista finishes the year at 33-12 overall. The loss also ends the career of 13 players who went on to capture three A-R-C titles, one tournament title and a pair of NCAA Regional Tournament appearances.
