Baseball Wins A-R-C Tournament Title with 8-7 Walk-off over Neb. Wesleyan

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 10, 2025) - The Buena Vista baseball team rallied late with three runs in the seventh before sophomore Jake Eddie came through with the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to knock off No. 6 seed Nebraska Wesleyan in the championship game of the American Rivers Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Freshman Cooper Sobeck laced a double off the top of the left field wall with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and then was replaced by pinch runner Jacob Eversole who scored the game-winning run on Eddie's hard ground ball base hit right back up the middle just a few pitches later.

BVU trailed 7-4 going to the bottom of the seventh inning and rallied with three runs in that frame to tie it at 7-7. Freshman Kaden Struck got the scoring started with an RBI double down into the right field corner followed by a sacrifice fly from junior Connor Zegar. Sobeck then drove in the game-tying run with a sharp infield single deep into the hole at shortstop with two outs.

The Prairie Wolves, playing their sixth game of the tournament, got on the board first with a run in the third before BVU struck back in the bottom half with RBI's from Drew Taylor and Zegar. NWU then went back in front in the fourth with two runs and then later extend the margin to 4-2 with one more in the fifth.

Buena Vista tied things at 4-4 in the fifth after an RBI single from Zegar followed by a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt that scored Drew Taylor from third. The Prairie Wolves then pushed across three runs in the sixth to lead 7-4 only to see the Beavers rally yet again to tie the game and eventually capture its first conference tournament crown since 2019.

Senior Joel Garcia, along with Zegar and Sobeck, finished with two hits apiece, including doubles from Sobeck and Zegar. Senior Tegan Bock also doubled and walked in the game as BVU chalked up three doubles in the contest.

Senior Evan Taylor singled and went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. His single in the third was the 240th in his career which ties him with Jordan Mathewson for the program's all-time lead. Drew Taylor walked three times and scored three runs with Zegar going 1-for-3 with a team-high three RBI.

Freshman Dylan Johnson came on in relief and earned his second win of the tournament. The left hander tossed 3.2 innings scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. He took over for senior Zach Pleggenkuhle who worked 2.0 innings of relief and was charged with four runs and five hits. Freshman Gunnar Russell made the start and pitched the first 3.1 innings.

Buena Vista improves to 32-10 overall and will earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament which takes place May 16-18.
