Simpson Holds off Beaver Baseball 7-4 in Series Finale

INDIANOLA, Iowa (Apr. 21, 2025) - After sweeping Saturday's American Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader at Simpson College, the Beavers returned team returned to
McBride Field on Monday to play the Storm in the series finale, but a five-run second inning by the home team proved to be the difference, as BVU saw its six-game win streak come to an end with a 7-4 loss.

Simpson pushed across a run in the first inning before belting a pair of home runs in the second inning off of starter Zach Pleggenkuhle to build an early 6-0 advantage.

The Beavers were held without a hit until senior Evan Taylor led off the fourth inning with a double but was later stranded at third. BVU loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth but Taylor grounded out to second to end any further threat. The team also stranded a runner in both the sixth and seventh innings before Simpson pushed across a run in its half of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-0.

BVU tried to make things interesting with a late-game rally as it pushed across three runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-3. Evan Taylor homered to centerfield to lead off the inning before freshman Kaden Struck later tripled home a run. Connor Zegar then drove home Struck on an RBI groundout. Evan Taylor, who earlier in the afternoon was named the A-R-C Position Player of the Week, continued his torrid stretch with a 2-out RBI double in the ninth but then was tagged out at third to end the game on a ground ball to the third baseman.

Taylor finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and the home run while driving in three and scoring one. He's now hitting .368 on the year and is 11 for is last 17 at the plate with five doubles, nine RBI and six runs scored. Freshman Cooper Sobeck was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored as BVU ended with seven hits.

Simpson got a pair of home runs from Trenten Kingrey who drove in a game-high five runs for the Storm (12-18, 6-10 A-R-C).

Pleggenkuhle pitched 4.0 innings and was charged with six runs (three earned) and six hits while striking out two. Levi Kennedy went the final 4.0 innings and allowed only one run and three hits while also striking out a pair.

Buena Vista now sits at 24-7 overall (13-3 A-R-C) and will travel to Wartburg College on Tuesday, Apr. 22, for a DH against the Knights starting at 3:30 p.m.
