Baseball Wins 3-2 Thriller over Mount Union

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2025) - Senior right hander Mark Eddie allowed just one run over seven innings and struck out nine and senior Zach Pleggenkuhle struck out five of the eight batters he faced in relief to notch his second save of the year as the Buena Vista baseball team completed its spring trip with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mount Union on Saturday night.

Eddie has pitched at least 7.0 innings in back-to-back games this season and has allowed just two runs over 19.2 innings overall to lower his ERA to 0.92. Pleggenkuhle came on to work the eighth and ninth innings, and worked around an unearned run in the ninth inning with a strikeout and then snatched a comeback to throw out the batter at first for the final out of the game. He now leads the team with a 0.79 ERA this season covering 11.1 innings.

Senior Evan Taylor led BVU at the plate with three hits and three stolen bases. He now has 191 career hits and moves within one of Kevin Kloewer for eighth on the program's all-time list. He lined an RBI single the opposite way into left field in the fifth inning which proved to be a key insurance run for the Beavers that made it 3-1. Earlier in the inning, senior Joel Garcia drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly into center that scored sophomore Jake Eddie.

Mount Union grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI single to center before the Beavers tied things at 1-1 in the fourth as Taylor scored on a passed ball.

The Raiders (3-3) were sat down in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before its rally in the ninth. After Pleggenkuhle struck out the leadoff hitter in the inning, the next one walked and then he proceeded to score on an error by the Beavers. Then with runners at second and third, the lefty buckled down to record his fifth strikeout before fielding the comeback to end the game.

Garcia, Jake Eddie and Tegan Bock all chipped in with one hit apiece for the Beavers. Garcia now has 194 career base knocks and moves within one of Joe Paletta for sixth-place on the career hits list.

BVU tallied seven hits in the game and stranded nine runners. Both teams struck out 14 times.

Buena Vista goes 5-2 on the spring trip and improves to 7-3 overall. It returns to the diamond on Mar. 15 in Rock Island, Ill., and will play Illinois College at 10:30 a.m. and Augustana College (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. That weekend trip concludes on Mar. 16 against Dominican University at 10:30 a.m.
