MANKATO, Minn (Feb. 25, 2025) - Freshman
Cooper Sobeck and senior
Joel Garcia each launched home runs for the Buena Vista baseball team on Tuesday afternoon which aided the Beavers to a series win at Bethany Lutheran with a 7-1 victory in the finale.
It was a scoreless game until the fifth inning when BVU plated four runs, capped by Sobeck's two-run blast that marked the first hit and RBI of his collegiate career. Senior
Evan Taylor got the extra-base parade started by lacing a triple to the alley in right center field before later coming around to score when twin brother Drew doubled to the gap. Drew then scored when sophomore
Brandon Jenkins doubled down the right field line leading up to Sobeck's home run.
The Vikings got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning of BVU starter
Mark Eddie, but that was all they could string together. The Beavers added to their run total in the sixth with a three-run home run from senior
Joel Garcia. Eddie was lifted after allowing just the one run and three hits over five innings, walking two and striking out six. Freshman
Dylan Johnson and
Gunnar Russell each worked two innings to close the door and allowed a combined two hits and two walks.
Jenkins led the way by going 3-for-5 with a double and stolen base, Garcia was 2-for-4 with the home run and three RBIÂ and
Drew Taylor added a pair of hits. Sophomore
Jake Eddie also doubled as six of BVU's 11 hits in the game went for extra bases.
Buena Vista improves to 2-1 overall and is set to travel to Winter Haven, Fla., for its annual Spring Break trip and compete in the Russmatt Tournament. BVU plays the first of seven games for the week on Sunday, Mar. 2 against St. John Fisher at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
