Reed Reaches 1,000 Points; Jones Makes 6 Threes during Win over Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa (Feb. 19, 2025) - Buena Vista fifth-year Gunner Reed scores 24 points and put the finishing touches on the game by scoring his 1,000th career point while junior Jackson Jones nailed a career-high six three-point shots to follow with 22 points, as the Beavers rolled to a 77-57 road win at Simpson College on Wednesday night.

Jones made the first of his attempts to put BVU up 3-0 and went on to make four three-point tries in the opening half to score 14 of his career-best 22 points as Buena Vista built a 37-26 halftime lead. Reed had 11 points at the break and continued his balanced attack with 13 more in the second which led to his fifth 20-point game of the year, but his first since finishing with 20 in the A-R-C opener at Central.

The Beavers began the second half with Jones making two quick shots from beyond the arc that put them up 43-26 out of the gate. Simpson got a layup to halt the 6-0 surge, but BVU responded with five straight points that put the team up 20. The Storm slowly chipped away and got within 13 at the 12:00 mark but Ned Hays made a three-pointer that stopped the run and Simpson never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Reed reached the 1,000-point mark with a fastbreak dunk inside the final 30 seconds for the game's final score. He becomes the 34th player in program history to conquer the mark and joins teammate Zane Neuabum, who surpassed the point total early last season.

Buena Vista used the long ball to its advantage all game and finished the night making 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) and finishing 27-of-62 (43.5 percent) overall. The Beavers also made 8-of-11 attempts at the free-throw line in the second half and 11-of-16 for the game.

Sophomore Carter Sievers was the final player in double figures with 10 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow sophomore Kyle Sternberg chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Senior Gabe Peterson came off the bench and hauled in six boards and dished out a career-best five assists.

Levi Gurwell turned in 21 points to lead Simpson (5-20, 2-14 A-R-C) while Bo Hutson added 18 off the bench, as the Storm concluded their season.

Buena Vista keeps its conference tournament hopes alive with the win and improves to 12-12 overall (7-8 A-R-C). The Beavers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Tip-off inside Snyder Arena is set for 4 p.m.

BVU is currently tied with Wartburg for the sixth and final spot. The Knights travel to Coe College with the Kohawks tied with Central College for fourth at 8-7. The Dutch, which have lost four straight, play at Luther College.
