DUBUQUE, Iowa (Jan. 8, 2025) - Freshmen
Bradi Krager and
McKenna Scott scored 14 points apiece to lead four players in double figures for the Buena Vista University women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Loras, but the Beavers came up short in the American Rivers Conference outing, 85-67.
Loras made a trio of three-point baskets and was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line in the opening quarter while BVU made just one from downtown and only attempted two free-throws, and the Duhawks built a 22-11 cushion. The Beavers hung around in the second quarter while making 5-of-9 from long range but Loras had a response each time while making five treys of its own to remain on top 45-35 at the break.
The Duhawks maintained the 10-point cushion throughout the third and eventually extended the margin to as many as 19 late in the frame before the Beavers scored the final four points heading to the fourth. A three-pointer by Krager three minutes into the fourth brought BVU back within 10 at 67-57, but a 14-4 spurt from there put the Duhawks up by 20 late in the quarter.
Krager reeled in a game-high four made three-point buckets which matched a career-high and was the third game this season in which she had drilled at least three. She also matched a career-best with nine rebounds. Scott, meanwhile, scored in double figures for the first time in her career on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. Junior
Danika Demers matched both Krager and Scott with five made field goals and was right behind with 12 points while pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out four assists. Freshman
Tyme Boettcher made a pair of three-point buckets and was 4-of-4 at the free-throw line to chip in 10 points.
As a team, the Beavers were 24-of-66 from the field for 36.4 percent and buried 10-of-33 from long range (30.3 percent). It missed only one attempt at the charity stripe in the contest, going 9-of-10. The Duhawks were just a touch better at 39.0 percent shooting overall and 12-of-34 from behind the arc. They made only eight turnovers in the game while scoring 18 points off of 16 BVU miscues.
Claire Wagner turned in 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead Loras (5-8, 2-2 A-R-C).
Buena Vista dips to 5-8 on the year (0-4 A-R-C) and returns home to Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 11, to host the University of Dubuque in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
