CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Buena Vista University men's basketball team held a 28-27 lead at the half, but in a game that featured 12 lead changes, it was the Beavers coming up short in the end on Saturday evening on the road at Coe College, 64-60.
Senior
Simon Daniel made a pair of free-throws with 49 seconds left to play to cut the Coe lead down to 62-60 and after forcing a missed shot by Coe, senior
Gunner Reed hauled in the rebound and BVU came back down the court and got an open three-point attempt but the shot rimmed off with under 10 seconds remaining. BVU was forced to foul and the Kohawks stepped to the line and made the final two attempts to secure the win.
Coe led the majority of the first half, but never by more than five points, and Buena Vista took a 28-27 lead into intermission after a three-point play from sophomore
Carter Sievers as the clock ran out. The Kohawks led by eight midway through the second half before an 11-2 surge by the Beavers gave them a 48-47 lead after a dunk from Reed.
A quick response on the next trip down the floor gave Coe the lead right back and it never trailed from there. The Kohawks built a seven-point cushion at 62-55 before the final push from the Beavers over the final two minutes came up just short.
Sievers turned in 16 points to lead Buena Vista with Reed chalking up 15 points and eight rebounds. Grad student
Zane Neubaum made 6-of-8 shots from the free-throw line and scored 13 points, despite being held to only 3-of-13 shooting from the field. Daniel pitched in with five rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Beavers.
The Kohawks made just four more field goals than BVU but shot 51 percent overall compared to only 37 percent by the Beavers. BVU was 5-of-23 from downtown and held the Kohawks to only 2-of-13. The Beavers had their chances at the free-throw line but converted only 13-of-24.
Bennett Sherry scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace the Kohawks (11-7, 5-4 A-R-C), as the two teams split the season series.
Buena Vista is 9-9 overall (4-5 A-R-C) and will have a week off before it hosts Luther College inside of Siebens Fieldhouse for Alumni Day on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m.
