Volleyball Edged by Carleton and St. Mary's (MN)

WINONA, Minn. (Sept. 7, 2024) - The Buena Vista University volleyball team played its final two matches at the Sugar Loaf Classic on Saturday morning, but the Beavers fell to both Carleton College, 3-0, and against the host Cardinals, 3-1.

In the opener, both teams had strong offensive performances, but Carleton had just one attack error and 16 kills en route to a 25-15 victory. BVU trailed just 17-15 in the second set before the Knights rolled off six straight points to break things open and win 25-20. The Knights completed the sweep in the third set despite trailing 12-3.

Fifth-year Rachel Brockney notched a double-double to lead BVU with 11 kills and 12 digs in the match. Junior Kyla Vaughn was next with six kills as the team totaled 31 overall. Sophomore Jadyn Rausch dished out 25 assists with junior Mallory Ignaszewski posting 16 digs.

Against the Cardinals, BVU used a late 5-0 run to rally for a 24-19 lead and had to hold off a late rally by the hosts to take the first set 25-23. The Beavers came up short against St. Mary's last week in five sets during the Grinnell / Central Classic, but the team couldn't keep the early momentum going and dropped the next three sets, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21.

Brockney turned in her second double-double of the day by posting a team-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs. Hope Vanderlinden followed with eight kills. Rausch dished out 23 assists and added her own double-double by also registering 10 digs. Ignaszewski led the way with 17 digs.

Buena Vista dips to 2-7 on the year and is set to return home on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and host Martin Luther at 6 p.m.
