Volleyball with Road Sweep at Crown College

Box Score SAINT BONIFACIUS, Minn. (Sept. 20, 2024) - It was a balanced offensive attack for the Buena Vista University volleyball team on Friday night as it picked up a 3-0 non-conference road win at Crown College by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 26-24.

Sophmore Sydney Meints helped lead the way for the Beavers with a career-high 14 kills and only four errors which led to a .370 attack percentage. Meints surpasses her previous career-best of 10 kills set during the team's home-opening win over Martin Luther. Fifth-year senior Rachel Brockney turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Junior Mallory Ignaszweski matched Brockney with 16 digs and tied for the team lead with three ace serves.

Freshman Merced Ramirez just missed out on a double-double with nine kills and 15 digs. She finished without an attack error on 24 total swings for a career-best .375 attack percentage. BVU finished the night with 42 total kills, 18 errors and a .169 percentage. Sophomore Jadyn Rausch dished out 29 assists and chipped in with nine digs

The Beavers broke open a back-and-forth opening set and appeared in control with a 22-13 lead late before Crown, which didn't have an attack error in the set, roared back to within 22-20. A service error broke the Crown string before Ramirez followed with consecutive ace serves for the Beavers to secure the win.

BVU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to begin the second set, and after Crown pulled within 5-3, the Beavers rolled off 10 straight points with Brockney serving to go in front 15-3. Crown did respond with a brief 5-0 spurt, but never threatened the rest of the set as the Beavers notched the 25-14 win. The third set was a battle from the opening serve with neither team able to build any sort of lead. Crown led 7-2 early on before  BVU tied it at 8-8. Crown held multiple four-point advantages, including a 17-13 lead before a kill from Meints helped jump start a big 6-2 run that tied it at 19-19. Each team then traded two point swings with Crown then going in front 23-22. A serving error by Crown followed by another kill from Meints put BVU at match point only to see Crown pull even at 24-24. From there, Brockney and Meints recorded back-to-back kills to close the book.

Buena Vista is now 5-10 on the year and will be back on the court on Saturday for a triangular at Minnesota-Morris. The Beavers play the host Cougars at 11 a.m. and then will play Bethel at 1 p.m.
