Women's Soccer Blanks Spurgeon 7-0

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 17, 2024) - The Buena Vista University women's soccer team returned home on Tuesday afternoon to host Spurgeon College, and the Beavers remained perfect on their own turf with a 7-0 shutout of the Knights.

Senior Mia Norton, who had just three career goals entering the contest, recorded her first career hat trick to help lead the way. Junior Alyssa Cathcart scored her first two career goals and assisted on another, and senior Chloe Lippert scored once and dished out one assist.

Norton broke a scoreless match when she took a shot off a rebound early in the eighth minute. She then made it 2-0 after 15 minutes off a nice lead pass from Lippert.

Angelica Miller then lofted a nice interior pass from the upper right side that found senior Maddy Bigalke who finished things off with her second goal of the year. Cathcart, who was on the fast break mission the entire contest, finally got a shot attempt passed the keeper just before halftime to make it a 3-0 contest.

Eight minutes into the second half, the Knights were called for a hand ball just next to their goal which led to a BVU penalty kick attempt from Lippert. She converted the attempt for her team-leading ninth goal of the year and 15th of her career. Cathcart's second goal came midway through the second half to make it 6-0 before Norton capped the scoring on an assist from Cathcart.

Buena Vista totaled a season-high 36 shot attempts for the match, led by Cathcart's team-high seven. Norton had six shots, including five on-goal while Lippert added four. Defensively, the Beavers held the Knights without a single shot attempt as Trisha Westphal went the distance in-goal.

BVU is now 5-1-1 overall and is set to host Ripon College on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. The Beavers will also hold its Senior Day recognition during halftime of the match. Their originally scheduled match on Thursday versus Manhattan Christian College has been canceled.
