Bickford's Late Match Heroics Move Men's Soccer to 2-0 on the Year

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 1, 2024) - Buena Vista junior Kendall Bickford scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner on a free-kick with 3.8 seconds left, as the Beavers came from behind late in the match to stun Monmouth College, 3-2.

BVU trailed the Fighting Scots 2-1 with under 10 minutes to play. Kae Stover put a nice feed on a free kick from just across midfield that was then headed out of the air by Caleb Swanson that landed right at the feet of Jackson who took a couple dribbles before knocking a shot to the back of the net to pull the Beavers even.

From there, tensions began to rise as both teams tried to put pressure on the other. The Fighting Scots were called for a foul just outside the top of the box on the right upper right half which led to the clock being stopped with under four seconds remaining as a yellow card was also issued on the Scots. Bickford was called on to take the free-kick and knocked it past a diving keeper into the upper left corner of the goal and sending the Beavers into a frenzy.

Bickford now has three goals and one assist through the first two matches as the Beavers pick up wins in their first two outings of a season for the first time since 2012 when it began 3-0. The last time the team was unbeaten after two matches was in 2019 when it began 0-0-3.

The Fighting Scots grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the 15' before Bickford took a pass from Swanson 10 minutes later that tied things at 1-1. Monmouth regained the advantage at 2-1 on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half after the Scots came up empty on a PK in the first half after a nice diving stop by Zachary Sigler.

Bickford finished with four shots overall (all on-goal) to lead the way while Jackson had three shots (all on-goal). BVU finished with 12 shots overall with nine coming on-goal.

The Scots were held to six shot attempts with five coming on-goal. Sigler had a strong match in-goal for BVU with three saves while going the distance.

Buena Vista, 2-0 on the year, remains at home on Wednesday, Sept. 4, for a non-conference match against North Central University (MN) at 7:30 p.m.
