Women's Tennis Fall to Cornell and UW-Stout on Opening Weekend

MT. VERNON, Iowa (Aug. 31, 2024) - The Buena Vista University women's tennis team began its 2024 fall season on Saturday with a pair of matches on the campus of Cornell College. The Beavers fell to the host Rams in their first match before UW-Stout handed the Beavers a 6-1 setback.

The Rams (1-0) swept through doubles play to get things underway without allowing a point and would win all six doubles in straight sets. Abigail King was the closest Beaver to force a third set but would fall in the second by a 7-5 score.

UW-Stout won all three doubles matches to go up 1-0 in the match. Sophomore Macy Weller picked up BVU's first win of the day at No. 1 singles, knocking off Ella Lamppa in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Junior Taylor Fritz, playing in the No. 3 spot, nearly gave the team its second win of the match but was edged in three sets. She picked up a 6-4 win in the opening frame before dropping the second, 6-1, and then being edged in the third set tiebreaker, 10-5.

Buena Vista is 0-2 overall and will play Edgewood on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. to close out the weekend.
