Mathewson Becomes Hit King as Beavers Sweep DH over Wartburg

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Apr. 9, 2024) - Buena Vista's Jordan Mathewson became the program's all-time hits leader with a go-ahead RBI single in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader as the Beavers celebrated their home opener with a big doubleheader sweep over Wartburg College by scores of 6-5 and 7-2, respectively.

The Knights held a 2-0 lead in game two heading to the fourth inning when the BVU bats again erupted for four runs. Fifth-year senior Grant Oseka got it started with a 2-run single to the gap in left center. Mathewson then lifted his third hit of the day to right field that put BVU in front and sent him to the top of the all-time hits chart. Drew Taylor then made it 4-2 with an RBI single to left.

Taylor later came through in the bottom of the eighth inning with a big two-run double to the gap in left center field for his 11th two-bagger of the year. Evan Taylor then drove him in with an RBI single to make it 7-2.

Freshman Jake Eddie then capped off his final 3.2 innings of work on the mound in the ninth to record his first career save.

Drew Taylor finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and a run scored. Freshman Brandon Jenkins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Tegan Bock was 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch. Drew Camman earned the win in relief after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

The Beavers had to rally in the opener after falling behind 5-1 through three innings. Calvin Harris drove home a run in the fourth to begin the comeback before Drew Taylor launched a 2-run home run in the fifth and Zack Beekman blasted his second solo home run of the game in the sixth to make it 5-5. Bock tacked on an infield single later in the sixth for the eventual game-winning run.

Mathewson singled in his first at-bat of the day and was one of four Beavers to record to hits in the game.

Harris made the start on the hill and pitched the first three innings. Johnny Vallinch came on in relief and earned the win after 3.2 scoreless frames. Junior Mark Eddie then took over and pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his third save of the year.

Buena Vista extends its current overall win streak to five straight and improves to 21-6 (10-2 A-R-C). The team is now off until next Tuesday, Apr. 16, when it hosts Nebraska Wesleyan for a single-game at 6 p.m.
