Baseball Wins Series over Duhawks with 11-3 Win on Sunday

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Apr. 28, 2024) - Junior Evan Taylor and graduate student Jordan Mathewson combined to go 8-for-10 with seven RBI's while Ean McDaniel pitched seven strong innings, and the Buena Vista University baseball team capped off the series win on Sunday afternoon with an 11-3 victory over Loras College.

BVU was clinging to a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth when rain began to fall for the first time in the game. That didn't faze Taylor at all as he launched an opposite field 2-run home run to left during a steady rain that made it a 7-2 margin. He was then in the middle of a four-run seventh inning by scorching an RBI double to the gap in right center and then stole third, and as the throw down from the catcher hit off the batter and rolled over in front of the home dugout, allowing him to score and make it 11-2.

Loras was able to scratch across a run in the ninth when Jake Zeal grounded into a double play while the Duhawks stranded a runner at third to end the game.

Buena Vista jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first. Junior Joel Garcia and Mathewson started things off with back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 advantage before a sac fly from Drew Taylor and an RBI single from senior Calvin Harris made it a three-run cushion.

Evan Taylor drove home his first run of the day with an RBI single in the second while senior Zack Beekmann added a sac fly.

The Duhawks didn't get on the board until they plated two runs in the fourth.

Jackson Cullen was 3-for-4 to lead the Duhawks while Daniel Rogers and Jake Olszewski each doubled.
