ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Mar. 17, 2024) - Dominican University got a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, but it was all Buena Vista from there as the Beavers rolled to an 11-1 (7 inn.) victory over the Stars on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend trip.
The only blemish for BVU starter Mason Gehling on the day was the two-out solo blast in the first that gave the Stars the early 1-0 lead. The senior pitched six strong innings, allowing just the one run and three hits while striking out seven and walking two, as he improves to 3-1 overall. Freshman Jake Eddie pitched a scoreless seventh for the Beavers, allowing just one hit and worked out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to end the game.
Junior Drew Taylor gave the Beavers the lead in the third with a 2-run double that sparked a four-run inning. In the fourth inning, graduate student Jordan Mathewson doubled home a run and later scored on the play after an error by the Stars' second baseman as BVU extended its lead to 6-1. Junior Evan Taylor knocked home a pair of runs with his single before junior Joel Garcia later drove in Mathewson with a sacrifice fly. The Beavers plated their final run in the sixth as fifth-year Calvin Harris scored on a passed ball.
Mathewson finished 3-for-5 with the double, RBI and a game-high three runs scored. Both of the Taylor twins followed him in the line-up with two hits apiece while also driving in two. Drew Taylor also scored twice. Sophomore Tegan Bock chipped in with a 2-for-2 effort at the bottom of the line-up and matched Mathewson with three runs scored.
Buena Vista finished with 12 hits in the game but stranded 11. The Stars were held to just three hits and stranded five.
The Beavers improve to 11-4 on the year and gets set to open American Rivers Conference play on Mar. 22-23 with a three-game home series against Simpson College (7-7). Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday. The game is also the home opener for BVU.
