Beavers Fall at Third-Seed Loras 86-62

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Feb. 20, 2024) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team had its season come to an end on Tuesday night at No. 3 seed Loras College, as the Duhawks pulled away in the second half for an 86-62 victory over the sixth-seed Beavers.

Loras came out and shot 67 percent from the field in the first half, including 5-of-10 from downtown and led 38-26 at the half. Buena Vista was 40 percent from the field but was able to hang around after going 9-of-10 at the charity stripe.

The Beavers clawed their way back within 52-48 less than four minutes into the second half, but the Duhawks then used a big 15-3 spurt to push their cushion up to 67-51 with under nine minutes to play. BVU tried to stay close, getting within 10 at the 7:45 mark but an 11-0 run from Loras over the next four minutes all but put the game out of reach.

Senior Zane Neubaum led the Beavers with 17 points and moved into ninth on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,4633. Freshman Carter Sievers added 13 points and senior Gunner Reed chipped in with nine. Neubaum also led the way with five rebounds while Sievers tallied a pair of steals. Freshman Kyle Sternberg came off the bench and registered eight points and four rebounds while going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Sievers was 5-of-7 from the stripe as the Beavers finished 14-of-18 as a team.

The Duhawks (21-5) cooled off from long range in the second half, going just 2-of-10, but still shot 50 percent from the field in the half to finish the game at 58.2 percent (32-for-55). Tyler Bass led the way with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds as Loras will advance to the semifinal round on Thursday evening and travel to No. 2 seed Coe College.

Buena Vista wraps up its season at 13-13.
