Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Tops Austin College 84-75

SHERMAN, Texas (Dec. 17, 2024) - Zane Neubaum turned in 25 points while Carter Sievers followed with 18 to help lead the Buena Vista University men's basketball team to a strong 84-75 non-conference road victory during its first-ever meeting against Austin College on Tuesday evening.

Neubaum made a season-high five long range buckets and went 5-of-8 from downtown and 8-of-15 overall. It marks his sixth 20-point performance this season and the 39th of his career. Sievers, meanwhile, was 5-of-10 from the field and 6-of-8 at the charity stripe while also dishing out five assists. Kyle Sternberg was held to only four points but grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds and dished out a game and career-high six assists.

BVU was 6-of-10 from distance in the opening half, including three straight makes which led to an 11-4 lead. The Kangaroos didn't allow the Beavers to pull away, however, and eventually pulled within 28-27 with five minutes to go before taking their first lead at 36-25 with 1:25 left. Gunner Reed then gave BVU the lead right back on the next trip down the floor with a two-handed jam which led to a 37-36 halftime advantage.

Simon Daniel and Brody Gish each made shots from downtown early in the second half to keep the hot long range shooting going. The Beavers would go on to finish the game by making 11-of-23 overall (47.8 percent). Gabe Peterson gave BVU its first double-digit lead of the contest with under 13:00 left in regulation. A quick surge by the Kangaroos allowed them to get as close as five with 10 minutes remaining, but Jackson Jones later converted an and-one opportunity that gave the Beavers another 10-point cushion.

From there, Buena Vista was able to maintain the double-digit margin and eventually led by as many as 15 points at 73-58 with 4:13 to go.

BVU finished the game shooting 47.4 percent from the field. The Kangaroos (5-4) heated up in the second half and shot 48 percent to finish the game at 41 percent overall. They managed to stay in the game by going 20-of-23 at the free-throw line while also making nine treys of their own. Kidus Getenet led four players in double figures with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Buena Vista has now won back-to-back games to improve to 6-4 on the year and will play at the University of Dallas on Thursday (Dec. 19) at 5:30 p.m.
