Men's Basketball Pulls Away for 89-69 Road Win at Lakeland

Box Score PLYMOUTH, Wis. (Nov. 22, 2024) - Fifth-year senior Zane Neubaum scored a game-high 28 points, fellow fifth-year Gunner Reed added 22 and freshman Adam Bryte turned in a career-high 19, as the Buena Vista men's basketball team broke the game open down the stretch en route to an 89-69 non-conference road win at Lakeland University on Friday evening.

Neubaum made 10-of-17 shot attempts from the field along with all six attempts from the charity stripe while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out a season-high five assists. Reed was 9-of-19 overall from the field and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line while also hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds to give him his second double-double of the year and eighth of his career. This game, meanwhile, was about Bryte, who came in having scored 10 combined points on the year and went on to make 5-of-7 from long range and 7-of-9 overall.

The Beavers finished the game with a season-high 11 treys from beyond the arc (11-of-26) and shot a season-high 53.1 percent from the field overall. Neubaum and Reed combined for the only free-throws by the team in the game (9-of-10).

Lakeland scored the first five points of the game but that was the largest lead in the game for the Muskies. Buena Vista grabbed its first lead at 8-7 on a layup from Reed but the game was back-and-forth throughout the opening stanza with 12 lead changes overall. Junior Jackson Jones nailed one of his two three-point buckets midway through to give BVU a 29-27 lead. The cushion grew to 11 with a layup from sophomore Carter Sievers, and the Beavers led 47-42 at the break.

The game remained close early into the second half with Lakeland chipping away and eventually taking a brief 55-53 with under 13:00 to go. Bryte then caught fire with a layup to give BVU the lead back and then after a bucket from Neubaum off an assist from Bryte, the freshman then nailed back-to-back three-point shots which put the Beavers in front 68-55. The Muskies went on a little run of their own to get back within seven near the 7:00 mark, but BVU closed on a 17-4 run and improved to 21-7 under head coach Trevor Johnson when scoring at least 80 points.

Asanjai Hunter scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for the Muskies which fell to 0-5 overall.

Buena Vista snapped its two-game losing skid and evens its record at 2-2 on the year. The team is right back on the court Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23, for a 2 p.m. tipoff at Marian University (5-0).
