Spartans Knock off BVU Volleyball 3-0

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Nov. 2, 2024) - Fifth-year senior Rachel Brockney had 10 kills and 17 digs to lead Buena Vista as the Beavers hosted the University of Dubuque on Saturday, but it was the Spartans winning the American Rivers Conference showdown 3-0.

Brockney had the 10 kills on only four errors and 46 attempts for BVU, as no other player had more than five kills. As a team, the Beavers finished with 31 kills but has 23 errors which resulted in a .057 attack percentage. Junior Mallory Ignaszewski followed Brockney with 12 digs, Jadyn Rausch had 19 assists and nine digs, while Hope Vanderlinden and Sydney Meints each had three solo blocks.

The opening set was tightly contested in the early going before Dubuque broke open a 11-9 margin with a 7-2 spurt before ending the set by scoring the final seven points.

BVU came out and scored three of the first four points of the second set only to see Dubuque respond right back with six straight and grab a 7-3 lead. The Beavers fought back to tie things up at 9-9 and it was back-and-forth with seven ties to follow before the Spartans rolled off four straight points and build a 22-18 advantage en route to a 25-22 victory.

Dubuque broke a 6-6 tie in the third set to take control with a 12-3 run and never looked back as it completed the sweep with a 25-13 final.

The Spartans (21-8, 6-1 A-R-C) had 13 kills in both the first and third sets along with a match-high 15 in the second.

Buena Vista drops to 5-19 overall (0-7 A-R-C) and will conclude its season at home on Thursday, Nov. 7 by hosting Central College at 6 p.m.
