Football Dealt 56-21 Loss in Season Finale by Dubuque

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Nov. 16, 2024) - Buena Vista senior quarterback Zach Herrera tossed a pair of touchdown passes while Meven Obregon rushed for another, but it wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers closed out the season with a 56-21 home loss to the University of Dubuque.

Herrera, playing his final collegiate game, tossed first half touchdown passes of 21 and 15 yards and finished the day with 140 yards on 14-of-38 passing. Obregon carried the ball just nine times for 14 yards, but found the end-zone from one yard out midway through the second quarter to pull BVU within 28-14.

Senior Eman Alaniz carried the ball 20 times on the day for a team-leading 77 yards to go along with five catches for 58 yards and a 21-yard TD catch with 10 seconds left in the opening quarter that put the Beavers on the board at 21-7.

Dubuque starting quarterback Joey Rhomberg tossed three touchdown passes in both the first and second quarters to lead the Spartans, who rank third in the country in passing yards per game at over 330.0ypg, to a 42-21 halftime lead. He added a seventh touchdown pass late in the third quarter and finished the day with 303 yards on 21-of-26 attempts.

The game's only points of the second half game in the final two minutes of the third quarter with Dubuque tossing a pair of touchdown strikes to finish the game with eight overall.

Za'Cameron Brice hauled in nine catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns with Jamari Jenkins catching six passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Dubuque (5-5, 5-3 A-R-C) chalked up 496 yards of total offense on the day with BVU finishing with 216.

Troy Reynolds and Nick Moorshead each tallied a team-high 10 tackles to lead the Beavers, defensively, with Alonzo Davis close behind at six. Reynolds posted the team's lone sack on the day for a loss of eight yards.

Buena Vista wraps up the year at 2-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play. A total of 10 seniors were recognized prior to the game before playing in their final career game: Caleb Green, Austin Smith, Mason Griffith, Zach Herrera, Eman Alaniz, Micah Cooper, Aydan Guenther, Nick Moorshead, Alonzo Davis and James Facio.
