Gunner Reed 14 to lead the Beavers at Carleton College on Friday night, but it was the Knights using a 13-4 run over the final six minutes to squeak out a 62-60 victory and hand BVU its first loss of the season.
Neubaum made a layup with just over six minutes to play in regulation that put Buena Vista in front 56-49. Sam Koelling then scored 11 straight points for the Knights, including a trio of makes from downtown that aided the surge. Neubaum kept the Beavers within 60-58 after a pair of made free-throws with 21 seconds left, but BVU had committed only two fouls in the half to that point.
BVU nearly forced a 10-second violation before fouling just across half court. From there, the team nearly forced multiple turnovers on the throw-in attempts from Carleton but were forced to foul before eventually putting Carleton a the line for a 1-and-1 with under seven seconds to go. Both attempts were made to make it 62-58. Reed scored a runner in the paint with under one second to go but it was too-little-too-late.
Neubaum made 7-of-15 shots from the field overall in the contest, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. He tied for the team lead with six rebounds and also chipped in with a team-high four steals. Sievers made a team-high eight field goals and grabbed eight boards with Reed also making seven 7-of-11 from the field and registered six rebounds.
Simon Daniel and
Kyle Sternberg were the only other players to score for the Beavers as each added four.
Buena Vista was 4-for-17 shooting for distance in the game and was 47.2 percent from the field overall. The Knights were 6-of-17 shooting from long range in the second half and finished 9-of-26 overall. The two teams combined to attempt only 17 free-throws in the game with Carleton making all seven and BVU going 6-of-10.
Luke Harris led the Knights (2-1) in scoring at 25 points with Koelling following with 16. Carleton is picked to finish third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season and has gone 41-13 overall over the last two seasons combined.
The Beavers are now 1-1 on the year and turn right around on Saturday, Nov. 16, for a non-conference match-up at Bethel University (1-1).
